How do I configure the RemoteServer?

RemoteServer has to be installed and started. The address and port of each RemoteServer must match the address and port in the corresponding line in the Signet preferences file. Advanced configuration of RemoteServer is available through the RemoteServer preferences file. Here is an example of a RemoteServer preferences file:

RemoteServerLogFile: log.txt
RemoteServerPortNumber : 6000
CacheFolder : cache
CacheSize : 300
MemorySize : 512
NumProcessors : 1
GUI : false

Memory and cache sizes are in megabytes. Memory size is used as a threshold for the JVM to start garbage collecting. If you want to increase the total amount of memory available for the RemoteServer JVM, you should insert the following line in the RemoteServer.lax file:

lax.nl.java.option.java.heap.size.max=XXXXm

Where XXXX refers to the number of kilobytes and the upper limit is operating system and JVM dependent. It generally runs between 1500-1700. For example:

lax.nl.java.option.java.heap.size.max=1516m

Note that in some cases this line may already be there, and only the amount of memory needs to be specified.

If you set the GUI to "true", you will see a console window detailing how RemoteServer processes requests. You can always close this window without affecting RemoteServer functionality. Setting the GUI to "true" may be useful for troubleshooting, but generally this parameter should be set to false.

If your organization is using a proxy server or firewall, some additional configuration may be needed. Consult your network administrator.
