Can I check the status of a RemoteServer without GeneSpring or GeNet?

Yes, you can. You will need a telnet application which comes with nearly every operating system. Telnet to a RemoteServer and type GetVersion and press Enter. Nothing will appear on the screen as you type, but after you press Enter, you will see a response.
